![]() ![]() ‘.down in the eastern districts, yet there are reports of activity stirring down in the harbours.’ Enoch Chambers, pretender to the abolished throne, glanced to Edi. The morning briefing: an exercise in seeing just how large our dear leader’s ego could grow. With his face expressionless, Vince joined Warren in putting fists to the downed thief. While Warren pounced upon the lookout, Hunt rushed inside the jewellery store, setting after the other, fleeing man. He froze for a moment, then muttered, simply, ‘Oh fuck.’Ī man inside the establishment cried out a question, but from his tone it was clear that he already had the answer-that he was intended to run. The burglar on lookout duty turned around, at first eyeing up the vehicle, but then landing his gaze upon the approaching trio of Legion officers. Not one of theirs, but one of the few owned by the aristocrats of Haven, apparently at this particular hour being driven by one of their sons, and his group of wayward friends. Of course, this was the moment that an automobile tore down the street. The trio walked fast, without running, their feet not making a sound beneath them, and not attracting the attention of the distracted lookout. ‘Go.’ Warren led the charge across the street toward a luxury jewellery shop. ‘Just waiting for him to look the other way. ‘Do I look like I can do anything about that?’ Warren responded. ‘Thought we were expecting three or four?’ Vince asked, putting on the voice and accent that his role demanded. Vince and Hunt’s hands snapped to their revolvers. ‘Get ready,’ Warren said, half whispering, half growling. Looking up, Vince caught Hunt staring at him, just for a moment, and this wasn’t the first time. He took, at least, some comfort in the fact that thieves would be just as unimportant to Queen Elmira’s society as they were to Enoch Chambers’s-if he was to attack anyone, let it be those who broke the law, preying on good citizens. All was fair in the service of Her Majesty. To assault-possibly kill, if Warren had much to say on the matter-these thieves was not the type of work Vince had signed up for, yet he still would have done so had he known. Vince did not relish the job ahead of him. It should have been my role, of course, due to my highly graded Perspicacity, or perhaps Hunt, with his epic grade Seasoned, but neither of us apparently thought the point worth arguing. At the next corner, Warren gestured for Hunt and I to halt, and allow him to scout ahead. ![]() In the distance, there was the gentle trinkle of glass shattering our burglars were ahead of schedule. We did not let these distract us as we journeyed through the district-we had intelligence of where this criminal gang would strike, and we knew where we should be. No, it was primarily shops and cafes that were situated in ground floor premises around here, and the only signs of life being the odd light or lantern flickering in the windows above. This part of the city was largely deserted at this late hour, those few establishments open “late” around this district was nothing compared to the “late” of the Dripcanal or certain outer parts of the Sunrise District. Warren turned to he and Hunt, nodded, and then led them down the dimly lit streets of the Commercial District. Vince Perch exited the automobile-a noisy, worrying affair compared to the inventions of back home-alongside two of his so-called colleagues. But throughout it all, I had my mind on this singular purpose.Īnother night, another despicable order to carry out. The job was hard, at times, and easy at others. I did as commanded by the Prime Minister only to hold my place in Haven’s high society, so that-once the time came-I would have a city state to hand over to my distant queen. I take no great delight in the things Enoch Chambers had me do, of course. ![]()
